Ellie S.

In March 2004 at the age of 70, I had a massive heart attack. I had no pain or discomfort, I just felt like I was coming down with the flu. I went to the emergency hospital and I was told I was in the midst of a massive heart attack. My family was called in and many tests were taken. The cardiologist said I had blockage in my main arteries and needed stents or major open heart surgery. There was no guarantee that the stents would be enough, so I chose to have the open heart artery replacement. When I awoke, I found out that I had a five-way bypass. The following year I had a stent placed in the sixth artery. From that time on, I have had angina and suffered with that until 2009. I changed cardiologists and have felt wonderful ever since. I am on an aspirin regimen (at night) and I keep my aspirin by my bed in case of another attack. My cardio doctor told me that if I have this discomfort in the night or upon waking, I should place an aspirin under my tongue. I knew nothing about heart attacks and there wasn't any history in my family. I'm just glad that I was one block from a hospital. I had help very quickly at the Thunderbird Banner Hospital in Phoenix, AZ.
