Eve & Joy Behar Challenge Women to Be Their Own Heart Health Advocates

Comedienne and television host Joy Behar has a long history of heart disease in her family: Joy's mother had a heart attack in her early fifties, and she lost two grandparents and an uncle to heart attacks. Joy knows the devastating impact it can have on a family when it's left unchecked. That's why she and her daughter, Eve, have partnered with the makers of Bayer® Aspirin and WomenHeart: the National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease for the Mom's Second Chance program.
"My daughter, Eve, and I feel it's important to motivate other moms and their children to make changes that can help them to live a heart-healthy lifestyle."

Women & Heart Disease

Women often put their loved ones first, neglecting to take care of themselves. That's why it's so important for women to take a moment to learn a few facts about the nation's #1 killer of women.

  • Over 250,000 women die each year from a heart attack.
  • More than half of those who died suddenly from a heart attack experienced no previous symptoms.
  • Women more often present atypical signs of a heart attack, such as abdominal pain or shortness of breath, without the classic chest pain that many recognize as the symptom of a heart attack.
  • One study suggests that women under the age of 55 who are experiencing a heart attack are nearly seven times more likely to be misdiagnosed than men of the same age.
  • During a suspected heart attack, call 911 and take at least two low dose aspirin (81 mg each) or one regular-strength aspirin (325 mg), as directed by a doctor in order to reduce damage to the heart.

Joy & Eve Behar Honored With AARP The Magazine's Inspire Award

On December 9th, 2010, Joy and Eve were honored with AARP The Magazine's 2011 Inspire Awards for their work on Mom's Second Chance campaign. The campaign is aimed at urging women -- who are less likely than men to survive a heart attack -- to be prepared if a heart attack strikes without warning. AARP The Magazine's Inspire Awards recognize people who have inspired others to action through their innovative thinking, passion and perseverance.

Joy & Eve received their awards during a private gala at the Ronald Reagan building in Washington D.C, along with other notable honorees including Tony Danza and Henry Winkler. Maya Angelou was also honored at the gala with AARP's prestigious Andrus Award, which pays tribute to the legacy of AARP's founder, Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus. Renowned broadcast journalist Jane Pauley, AARP's Ambassador of Your Life's Calling, hosted the event.

In addition to their award, Joy and Eve were profiled, with the other winners, in the January/February issue of AARP The Magazine. Click here to view Joy talking about her work with heart disease in the featured video on AARP.org

"My mom has always told me that even though change can be hard and scary, do it anyway. That's the message we have for moms: Be your own advocate, and make the changes now to live a heart-healthy life."
